Welcome to American Legion Post 143
American Legion Post 143 was established in 1919, the year after World War I ended. The Legion was named after a New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, resident, William H. Nauss who was killed in the war.
In 1934, the Legion moved to a new facility at 7th and Market Streets. A larger building was connected to the post 1949 and membership had grown to more than 2,400. The Legion, was forced, in 1975 to give up the property with the memberships and revenues declining. With the loss of the building, the Legion was forced to move to smaller quarters at 206 Third Street, in 1978. The smaller facility hampered growth for years while plans for a new building were underway.
On August 10, 1996, the official ground breaking was held and construction began. At a cost of more than $500,000 the new facility once again served the membership and community.
